David Orr’s Sobering Talk Highlights Need for ESR Conference

On April 5 at Xavier University, David Orr presented a clear but sobering perspective on global warming.

He said that:

1. We have raised Earth’s temperature by .8 degrees, which is causing the melting of the polar ice caps.  This will, in turn, cause some major changes for Earth.
2. The effects of increased carbon levels aren’t evident for five years.  What we have done over the past five years will raise the temperature by 1.6 degrees, which will cause very serious problems.  These problems have already been set in motion and there is nothing we can do to change it.
3. Scientists are saying that if we raise the temperature by a total of 2 degrees, just .4 degrees higher, it will be cataclysmic.
4. We have just five years to determine whether we can change our actions to avert this disaster.

Our present economic system is a major cause of global warming.  Developing a new economic system is critical!  It is something we need to do now.  It is here that our hope lies.
